Climbing Mt Kinabalu can be done in 2 days but a more comfortable 3-day climb is recommended to help climbers better acclimatise to the altitude and to fully enjoy the rich biological diversity the mountain has to offer - Mt Kinabalu boasts more than 6,000 plants species, many of them exotic and rare, including a rich variety of the pitcher plants (Nepenthes) and the Rafflesia (the largest flower in the world).

Hiking up the well-worn mountain trails require only basic fitness levels. However climbers who have health conditions or are over 50 years of age are encouraged to get a medical certificate certifying their fitness to make the climb.

Park regulations require that climbers engage the services of a registered mountain guide (rest easy, go with us and we'll take care of all of that for you).

Porters can be engaged at Park Headquarters if necessary.

Day #1 - Nabalu Market and Kinabalu Park

Take a leisurely drive through the countryside stopping at Nabalu to browse the local fruit and vegetable and handicraft stalls - this is also one of the best places to take stunning pictures of Mt Kinabalu. Drive on to Kinabalu National Park which is approximately 1,500 meters above sea-level on the slopes of majestic Mt. Kinabalu. You will have ample time to explore the park grounds before dinner. Stay overnight at Park Headquarters.

Day #2 - Ascend Mt Kinabalu

Your trek begins at the Timpohon gate after breakfast at the Balsam Restaurant and, depending on your level of fitness the climb could take between 4 - 6 hours. Trails are clearly marked and there are many rest-stops along the way. Please note that your accommodation is a non-heated dormitory so we suggest you bring sufficient warm clothing with you. Showers are available but hot water may be limited depending on the number of climbers present at Laban Rata basecamp.

  • Low's Peak

Day #3 - Conquering the summit

Your trek begins way before dawn in order to give you enough time to reach the summit before day break. The trek back down the mountain begins at around 7:00 am (after breakfast of course) and you should arrive back at Kinabalu Park Headquarters by around 2:00 pm in the afternoon for the journey back to Kota Kinabalu.

    2:00

After a quick meal you begin the ascent to the peak of Mt Kinabalu. The final 2 kilometers to the summit takes around 2 - 4 hours depending on weather conditions and how fit you are.

The climb is steep. However guide ropes have been strategically placed to assist you in your climb (don't worry the ropes are a permanent fixture and is there to provide you with a better handhold when making the final ascent).

Weather-permitting you'll get to witness a glorious sunrise at the highest peak in Southeast Asia before beginning your descent to Laban Rata Basecamp.

    7:00

Make your way back down to basecamp for a quick breakfast before continuing your descent to Park Headquarters. Once back at ground level we'll collect your certificates of achievement and then head over to the Balsam Restaurant for a much deserved buffet lunch.

    14:00

Head back to Kota Kinabalu and onwards to your next adventure!

What to bring along with you ...
  • Clothing and gear

Weather on the mountain can be unpredictable and you can expect torrential rains depending on the time of year (and sheer bad luck). We highly recommend that you use water-proof / resistant backpacks or bags to help keep your belongings dry. This is even more so if you are carrying electronic equipment and cameras. Wear comfortable climbing shoes with rubber soles that have good grip and make sure you bring along a weather-proof jacket or windbreaker - you may also want to consider bringing along a disposable raincoat. Additional socks are essential and you may want to bring along gloves to aid in the final leg of your climb. Finally bring along a head mounted torch leaving you free to use both hands during the climb and pack some high energy snacks (e.g. powerbars, nuts and chocolates) for that extra boost of energy.

  • Insect repellent

  • Medication

Please bring along any medication that you may require. This may include medication for altitude sickness and painkillers which you can purchase from any pharmacy.

  • Personal amenities

Toilet paper, tissues, sun block, lip gloss, plasters (band-aids)

  • Refillable Water Bottle

Bring along plenty of water - you'll need it for both the trek up and down the mountain.
